Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Pedestrian movement for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Background

The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) is tasked with ensuring that the legacy created by the success of the London 2012 Olympic Games is delivered. The vision for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and local community is to transform the space into an area of innovation and vibrancy, delivering significant legacy benefits. A key challenge for the LLDC is to understand how the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is used. Movement Strategies has been commissioned to monitor and analyse pedestrian activity for a 24 month period.

WHAT WE DID

Movement Strategies has deployed a number of different automated footfall capturing technologies such as pedestrian simulation software to record pedestrian movement that now provides the evidence base for decision making with regard to pedestrian movements with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Automated footfall cameras were installed in strategic locations around the Park that covered key entry and exit routes. The information captured is complemented with open source and data informed by onsite visits and observations to capture a detailed picture of people movement. Our findings are reported back to the LLDC every fortnight, accompanied with insights and explanations for trends.

RESULTS

These kind of insights and reporting provide the LLDC with quantifiable evidence that help them understand the performance of strategies and interventions, assisting them to make better decisions to justify their actions.

Having played a significant role in the delivery of a safe and enjoyable London 2012 Olympic Games, Movement Strategies has retained its involvement with the Olympic Park and is assisting (LLDC) to deliver the lasting legacy promise to the International Olympic Committee.
