“Using our data, you told us something new. You connected Northumbrian Water to our customers through data and showed us the possibilities of changing the way we do things,” the judges of the Northumbrian Water’s Innovation Festival 2021 explained as they awarded us Best Data Insight for our Oceans of Data Hack.
The challenge was to demonstrate how data could improve the planned maintenance scheduling for water utility assets. Previously we developed proof of concept decision support tools and value models for Urban Utilities. Once implemented, our proposed maintenance optimisation program will result in annual savings of AUD 1.8m with 100% improved data quality.
We applied this experience to look at the SCADA metrics and work orders provided with the objective of finding common areas to join both datasets and gain valuable insights. With the available pump on and off signals, we found this data could calculate minutes running each day.
Using our proprietary cloud-based data platform, we applied a range of data science techniques to identify, investigate and visualise key relationships and patterns. This helped us efficiently prioritise key opportunities for further exploration.
